The Basic Theorem and its Consequences
Let T be a compact Hausdorff topological space and let M denote an n–dimensional subspace of the space C(T ), the space of real–valued continuous functions on T and let the space be equipped with the uniform norm. Zukhovitskii [7] attributes the Basic Theorem to E.Ya.Remez and gives a proof by duality. He also gives a proof due to Shnirel’man, which uses Helly’s Theorem, now the paper obtains a...
متن کاملThe Political Environment and Ballot Proposition Awareness
Studies that examine whether voters make informed decisions on direct legislation and whether direct legislation enhances civic engagement presume a basic awareness of ballot propositions, yet little is known about why some ballot propositions are more widely known than others. Despite the fact that research on awareness of ballot propositions and political awareness focus on individual factors...
متن کاملLexical Cohesion and Literariness in Malcolm X's " The Ballot or the Bullet"
This paper unearths the contribution of lexical cohesion to the textuality and overall meaning of Malcolm X’s speech 'The Ballot or the Bullet'. Drawing on Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) and Hoey’s (1991) theory of cohesion, specifically lexical cohesion, whose main thrust is the role of lexical items in not only contributing to meaning but also serving as cohesive ties, the paper discusses how ...
متن کاملMaintaining the spirit of the reflection principle when the boundary has arbitrary integer slope
We provide a direct geometric bijection for the number of lattice paths that never go below the line y = kx for a positive integer k. This solution to the Generalized Ballot Problem is in the spirit of the reflection principle for the Ballot Problem (the case k = 1), but it uses rotation instead of reflection. It also gives bijective proofs of the refinements of the Generalized Ballot Problem w...

" There is a big difference between a fair game and a game it's wise to play. "-Bertrand (1887b). 1 A brief history of ballot theorems 1.1 Discrete time ballot theorems We begin by sketching the development of the classical ballot theorem as it first appeared in the Comptes Rendus de l'Academie des Sciences. The statement that is fairly called the first Ballot Theorem was due to Bertrand: Theor...
